The fruits of our labors

An earlier blog entry was about the garden we planted. We were successful in keeping out the deer because everything was in pots on our deck. Unfortunately we couldn't keep the kids out. Owen uprooted and flung all of our bean plants over the deck as well as knocked over the pots of carrots and radishes. Two bean plants survived replanting and we yielded exactly four beans. Thankfully, it looks like some more beans are coming. I punished Owen with no dessert and a time out, but it just didn't seem like enough retribution for his crime. I guess to a four year old no dessert (especially when it's chocolate cake and ice cream) is a harsh sentence.

We harvested a handful of pea pods, a few radishes, and two carrots. The tomatoes and peppers are looking healthy and we have some green tomatoes starting to sprout. We found a surprise of raspberry bushes at the edge of our yard and Sam and I enjoyed picking handfuls of the delicate and tangy fruit. I was surprised the deer didn't eat them first.

  1. This is why I haven't gardened yet (well, that and the zillion degree temps that will fry most anything). I'm sure I wouldn't be able to keep my kids out of it and they aren't patient enough to understand about waiting a LONG time for something.
