Sewing for Service

Every year our church women's organization sponsors service for the community. This year we are quilting to donate to infant hospitals, nursing homes, fire departments and others. Our original goal was 100 quilts for the year, but we have had so much fabric donated and people busily getting involved that we have already reached over 60 quilts. We have a new goal of 200 quilts and I am contributing my unused sewing abilities.

My mother taught me to sew when I was young and my Barbies were well dressed and had plenty of pillows and matching blankets. I continued to sew in high school, making my own Prom and Homecoming dresses that were stylish, modest and unique. I minored in fashion design, but I wish I had taken more sewing classes while in college. Since having kids, I have only gotten out my sewing machine to make curtains, pillow covers and patch clothing. Hopefully this quilting project will warm up my skills and I can get creative again.

I have made three quilts now. All hand quilted. Here is a picture of one. A lady in our church is teaching some children to embroidery and they are donating them for the quilts, which is where I got the middle square.
